Ho Chi Minh City in 2 Days: City Highlights, Cu Chi Tunnels or the Mekong Delta

Two days in Ho Chi Minh City? Here is a realistic plan covering the city highlights, the Cu Chi Tunnels and the Mekong Delta, written for travellers from India.

Vietnam

Ho Chi Minh City, still widely called Saigon, is often the starting or ending point of a Vietnam trip from India. It is energetic, full of motorbikes and street food, and a great base for two of southern Vietnam's best-known day trips. With two days, you have to choose, so here is how to make the most of them.

Day 1 morning: the city's history

Start at the War Remnants Museum, one of the most visited museums in Vietnam. It is moving and sometimes graphic, so families with young children may want to limit time in certain galleries. Then walk to the colonial-era Saigon Central Post Office and the nearby cathedral area, and continue to the Independence Palace (Reunification Palace), preserved much as it was in 1975.

Day 1 afternoon and evening: markets and the riverside

Spend the afternoon at Ben Thanh Market for souvenirs, coffee and snacks, with bargaining expected. In the evening, walk along Nguyen Hue Walking Street, which is lively with families and street performers, or take a river cruise on the Saigon River. Indian and vegetarian restaurants are easy to find in District 1.

Day 2: Cu Chi Tunnels or the Mekong Delta?

Both are popular, and both take most of a day. Some tours combine them into one long day.

  • Cu Chi Tunnels: about one and a half to two hours from the city. You see part of the vast tunnel network used during the war, with hidden entrances and traps, and can crawl through a short, widened section. Not ideal for anyone claustrophobic or with knee problems, though you can watch rather than enter.
  • Mekong Delta: around two hours away. Expect boat rides through narrow canals, fruit orchards, coconut candy workshops and village life. It is gentle and suits families and senior travellers well.

If you have a strong interest in history, choose Cu Chi. If you want scenery and a relaxed day, choose the Mekong Delta. With an extra day, do both separately rather than a rushed combined trip.

Practical tips

  • Weather: southern Vietnam is warm all year. The dry season is roughly December to April. From May to November, expect short, heavy afternoon showers.
  • Crossing the road: walk slowly and steadily. Motorbikes flow around you, so do not stop suddenly or run.
  • Money: carry some Vietnamese dong for markets and small purchases. Cards work in hotels and bigger shops.
  • Food: look for "chay" signs for vegetarian food and confirm "no fish sauce" when ordering.
  • Getting around: ride-hailing apps are widely used and are easier than flagging taxis.

Ho Chi Minh City fits neatly at the end of a north-to-south route through Hanoi, Ha Long Bay and Da Nang. You can compare Vietnam sightseeing tours from TripTard to plan the full trip.
