Phuket Island Tours Compared: Which Day Trip Should You Book?

James Bond Island, Phang Nga Bay
Phuket has more than a dozen popular island day trips, and most first-time visitors from India have time for only two or three. This guide compares the main ones honestly (what you see, how long you spend on the boat, and who each trip suits), so you can pick without regret.
Quick comparison
| Tour | Best for | Boat time | Season |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phi Phi Islands + Maya Bay | First-timers, photos | ~1 hr each way (speedboat) | Nov–Apr best |
| James Bond Island / Phang Nga Bay | Families, anyone prone to seasickness | Calm, sheltered water | All year |
| Coral Island + Racha | Kids, half-day, snorkelling | 15–30 min | All year (rougher May–Oct) |
| Similan Islands | Best water and diving | ~1.5 hrs from Khao Lak | Mid-Oct to mid-May only |
| Krabi 4 Islands (from Phuket) | Combining with a Krabi stay | Long if done from Phuket | Nov–Apr |
1. Phi Phi Islands – the classic
Maya Bay (of the film The Beach), Pileh Lagoon, Viking Cave and a snorkelling stop. Take a speedboat that leaves by 7:30 am: you reach Maya Bay before the big boats arrive. Swimming is not allowed at Maya Bay itself, so expect a walk-through visit.
2. James Bond Island and Phang Nga Bay – calm and scenic
Huge limestone karsts rise out of green water. The highlight is sea-canoeing through hidden caves (hongs) with a paddler. The bay is sheltered, which makes this the safest pick for elderly parents, small children or anyone who gets seasick.
3. Coral Island – the easy half-day
A 15-minute ride from Chalong Pier, a calm beach and optional parasailing or sea-walking. It works well on your arrival or departure day.
4. Similan Islands – for the best water
Thailand's clearest water and its best snorkelling. It is a national park, open only from mid-October to mid-May, and pickup starts around 6 am because boats leave from Khao Lak.
What explains the price difference between operators?
- National park fee: some tours include it and some collect it on the boat.
- Speedboat vs big boat: speedboats are faster, while big boats are cheaper and more stable.
- Pickup zone: Patong, Kata and Karon are usually free; Khao Lak or Kamala may cost extra.
- Lunch: check for a vegetarian or Jain option if you need one.
Suggested 4-day Phuket plan
- Day 1: Arrive, then Old Phuket Town, Big Buddha and sunset at Promthep Cape.
- Day 2: Phi Phi Islands by speedboat.
- Day 3: James Bond Island with sea-canoeing.
- Day 4: Coral Island half-day, then fly out.
